Using the app

The basics

How does Gesso decide what to show me?

From what you do. Swipe right to like, swipe left to dismiss, and — just as much — from how long you linger on a work, whether you zoom in, and whether you reveal its credit. There's no setup and no questionnaire. The feed sharpens as you use it; give it ten or so interactions before judging it.

Why does my feed feel random at first?

Because it doesn't know you yet. Early on Gesso is casting wide to find your edges. The more you react — and the longer you linger on the work that stops you — the faster it narrows. You can watch it form under Profile → Taste profile.

My feed feels stuck or too narrow. How do I broaden it?

A few levers. Turn on discover mode (Profile → Viewing preferences) for wider, less-tuned work. Remember that liking and dismissing are the strong signals — you don't have to use them; simply lingering on what you love is enough to steer the feed. Use Explore to seek out styles, artists, and galleries on purpose, save a My style for a direction you want more of, and if it still feels off, reset your taste profile under Profile → Clear data and start fresh.

How do I see the artist and title of a work?

Swipe up on the feed card. The image lifts to show the title, artist, and source. Every work in Gesso is fully credited — its wall label travels with it everywhere in the app.

What's the difference between liking and saving?

A like is a taste signal — it shapes your feed. A save is a bookmark for yourself, kept under Library → Saved, and it doesn't steer your recommendations. Use like to teach Gesso; use save to keep something to return to.

I dismissed something by accident. Can I undo it?

Yes. Open Profile → Clear data → Disliked. Every work you've dismissed is listed; tap the minus next to one to put it back in your feed.

Can I search for a specific kind of work?

Use the Explore tab to search and browse by style, artist, gallery, or curation. In filters, tap a style to include it and long-press to exclude it. You can also save a search in your own words under Library → My styles, then browse it any time.

How do I get the in-app tips back?

The hints appear once and then step out of the way. To replay them, open Profile → how Gesso works → show the tips again. Each tip reappears the next time its moment arrives.

Do I need an account?

No. Gesso is anonymous — a random identifier lives on your device the first time you open the app. There's no sign-up and no email required.

Privacy, data & your account

Your data is yours

What does Gesso know about me?

Only your taste profile: what you view, linger on, save, and dismiss, tied to the random identifier on your device. We do not sell it, do not share it, and do not use it to train anything outside of Gesso's recommendations to you. The full details are in the privacy policy.

How do I export my Gesso data?

In Gesso, open the Profile tab → Export your data. We hand the file to your browser at largesso.com/gesso/your-data as a single JSON document with your taste profile, your liked and saved works, your dismissed works, and your viewing history. No email is involved; the download starts as soon as the page opens.

How do I delete my Gesso account?

In Gesso, open the Profile tab → Delete account. We hand you off to largesso.com/gesso/delete for a confirmation, then remove your data within seven days; backups roll out within thirty. If you'd like a copy first, export your data before you delete.

How do I report a bug?

Tap Feedback in the tab bar, or write to support. Include your device and OS, the version of Gesso, what you did, and what you expected. A screenshot or screen recording helps.

I haven't received my early-access invite yet.

We open in waves. If you signed up at /early-access you are on the list. We don't send a "you're on the list" confirmation — the next email you receive from us will be the invitation itself, with a TestFlight or Play link.

Still stuck? Write to support — we read every message and reply within a few days.
